In a world where violence forces thousands of families to flee for their lives each day, on June 20th, we mark World Refugee Day to commemorate the strength, courage and perseverance of millions of refugees.
Voices Welcome strives for a society where refugees in the UK feel welcome and connected.
Our first project in Peckham is creating singing opportunities for local refugees and we have partnered with Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers (SDCAS) to deliver singing sessions which complement the services offered to local refugees.
Singing together can improve wellbeing and reduce social isolation but many refugees are unlikely to consider joining established groups.
Voices Welcome overcomes these barriers and helps to empower local communities to connect through singing. Volunteers from local Peckham choirs have been joining the singing sessions presenting opportunities to bring the community together.
Since our project which launched in Spring 2019 it has been well received and participants have been enjoying songs from Nigeria, South Africa and Senegal.
We stand together with refugees around the world today, and every day.
